From the Mayor Citizens of Montrose: It has recently come to our attention that there are some false rumors circulating throughout our community regarding the topic of Sanctuary Cities. The following communication has been going around to various citizens stating that the City of Montrose TROSE COLORA has actually discussed and considered becoming a Sanctuary City. Please know that this information is completely false. The City Council and City Staff HAVE NOT discussed or ever considered the idea of becoming a Sanctuary City Date: Thu, Jan 31, 2019 Subject: Sanctuary City INFO All Most you weren't present at Heidi's Deli today to hear about the great new partnership of the Montrose County Sheriff's Department and the Montrose Police Department, but it is a great "NEW DAY"for Montrose to be sure However, one person took the mike and congratulated the city for making Montrose a "Sanctuary City." You could hear the proverbial pin drop. After the presentation was over I inquired ofseveral Montrose City employees to see if this was true. I was informed from low voices that it happened several months ago when someone came to a Montrose City Council meeting and insisted/suggested that Montrose follow in the footsteps of Denver, Boulder & etc. to become a "Sanctuary City." The City Council quietly voted to make Montrose a Sanctuary city, but only as a "formality,"and not to prohibit the police department from turning over arrested illegal aliens to ICE (yet). Not even these sources knew all of the details. Ofcourse the Sheriff is not part of the city and the Sheriff runs the jail, but there could be "Trouble in River City. If you're wondering what's going on you're not alone, but this 'progressive" movement is slowly slithering across Colorado and is certainly not being made known to the people, especially those who VOTE! So FYI, if this movement has not yet come to your city it's just a matter of time Will your city government bend to it let this criminal foot in the door? (submitted by Mr. Ron Henderson) At a recent Heidi's Community Forum, a man asked the question, "is Montrose a Sanctuary City?" Police Chief Hall answered very clearly, "we cooperate with ALL federal agencies, and we are sworn to uphold the Constitution f the United States." Furthermore, City Council never votes "quietly" (as Mr. Henderson suggests in his emai do so would violate both State and local law. All votes are done in public and only at City Council Meetings Let me assure you, the City Council has NEVER discussed (much less, voted on) the subject of Sanctuary Cit and none of the 5 of us have any plans to discuss it in the future. Like our police officers and appointed officials, we took an oath of office as City Councilors swearing to uphold the Constitution of the United States and we hold our oaths as sacred. As Montrose citizens, we encourage you to follow up with your City representatives related to rumors or statements you might hear or read related to City policies or activities whenever they are concerning to you. Our contact information is listed on the City's website: www.cityofmontrose.org and we encourage you to attend our public Council Meetings at 6:00pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.
