U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Announces Virtual Scoping Meetings on an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) Availability Program Activities in Support of Commercial Production of HALEU Fuel DOE is hosting three virtual scoping meetings to share information, gather oral comments on the scope of the draft EIS, and enhance opportunities for public participation. DOE's proposed action, to be analyzed in the EIS, is to acquire HALEU through procurement from commercial sources and to facilitate the establishment of commercial HALEU fuel production. HALEU is a crucial material required by most U.S. advanced nuclear reactors to achieve smaller designs, longer operating cycles, and increased efficiencies over current nuclear energy technologies. However, HALEU is not currently available at commercial scale from domestic suppliers, which could significantly impact the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. The virtual scoping meetings are opportunities for the public to comment on the scope of issues that DOE will address in the draft EIS. For anyone unable to attend, the meetings will be recorded and made available via the website. In addition to oral comments submitted during the virtual scoping meetings, written comments may be submitted at any time during the scoping period, until July 20, 2023, by mail or email at the following addresses: Mail: Mr. James Lovejoy DOE EIS Document Manager U.S. Department of Energy Idaho Operations Office 1955 Fremont Avenue, MS 1235 Idaho Falls, Idaho 83415 Email: HALEU-EIS@nuclear.energy.gov Written comments received through the mail must be postmarked by July 20, 2023, to ensure consideration.
