U.S. Department of Energy Announces Virtual Hearings on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Activities in Support of Commercial HALEU Production The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) evaluating the potential impacts of the Department's proposed action to acquire high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for commercial nuclear energy use and demonstration projects and to establish domestic commercial HALEU production. DOE is hosting three virtual public hearings to explain the process used to analyze the proposed action and alternatives and solicit comments on the draft EIS. HALEU is a crucial material required by most U.S. advanced reactors to achieve smaller designs, longer operating cycles, and increased efficiencies over current nuclear energy technologies. HALEU is not currently available from domestic suppliers. A lack of this commercial supply chain could significantly impact the development and deployment of U.S. advanced reactors and increase the risk and uncertainty for private investment in the production of HALEU. Please see below for information on the virtual hearings. For anyone unable to attend, the hearings will be recorded and made available on the project website. Virtual Public Hearings: 1. April 3, 2024, at 6:00 pm ET via Zoom 2. April 3, 2024, at 8:00 pm ET via Zoom 3. April 3, 2024, at 10:00 pm ET via Zoom To access these meetings through your computer or smart device, visit https://www.zoom.us/join and enter the Meeting ID: 857 2381 4511 and passcode: 529257. To join via audio only (participants cannot see the presentation) call +1 301 715 8592 and enter the previously listed Meeting ID and passcode. DOE recommends all interested individuals pre-register to attend these virtual hearings at https://www.energy.gov/ne/haleu-environmental-impact-statement. Pre-registration is not mandatory. However, pre-registered attendees will have prioritized oral comments in the limited comment period and receive reminders leading up to the hearings. In addition to comments provided during the virtual public hearings, written comments can be submitted at any time during the comment period, until April 22, 2024, by mail or email to the following addresses: Mail: Mr. James Lovejoy DOE EIS Document Manager U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office, 1955 Fremont Avenue, MS 1235, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83415 E-mail: HALEU-EIS@nuclear.energy.gov Written comments received through the mail must be postmarked by April 22, 2024, to ensure consideration. The public comments received will help DOE refine its analysis, identify new information, and consider additional alternatives in preparation of the final EIS. Responses to comments and any associated revisions will be included in the final EIS.
